Gadget

A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technological objects at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos.”

Does “a stapler with batteries” qualify? Anything that comes with a remote control? Is everything you find on gizmodo fall into the category?

By loosely paraphrazing Arthur C. Clarke we get to: “Any sufficiently advanced Technology is indistinguishable from Magic.”

I for one would add that everything that in some way makes our life easier and more convenient, whether in the real world (hardware) or in cyberspace (software) is a Gadget.

So a super-large crane you see in the construction photos of the largest wind turbine in Germany (see the link) is one and so is the wind turbine itself. Or the Wattson energy monitor and the software that runs behind the scene and does the face recognition in Apple’s iPhoto program! You will find the Tesla e-car and all its companions (if we find them) here (but not the Volta – GM had its chance and screwed up – R.I.P.)

Gadget

1. A gadget is a new, often expensive, and relatively unknown hardware device or accessory that makes your life or the use of another device easier or more enjoyable.

Note: As a gadget becomes widely used, it is no longer referred to as a gadget. For example, when cell phones were first introduced they were considered gadgets, but as they became more mainstream, they were not any longer.
